EXXONMOBIL IN KAZAKHSTAN
With its more than 125-year-long history, ExxonMobil is the world's largest publicly traded international oil and gas company, providing energy that helps underpin growing economies and improve living standards around the world. ExxonMobil worldwide has a resource base of 84 billion oil-equivalent barrels, and the industry’s strongest portfolio of proprietary technology. Our upstream asset base includes exploration and production acreage in 38 countries and production operations in 24 countries. We have a geographically diverse portfolio of more than 130 major projects, global gas and power marketing activities, and an industry-leading workforce safety performance. The company produces 4.4 million oil equivalent barrels of oil and gas daily around the world. As the largest global integrated refiner, ExxonMobil has interests in 36 refineries in 21 countries. ExxonMobil is also the world's largest non-governmental marketer of equity natural gas, manufacturer of lube basestocks, supplier and marketer of petroleum products.
ExxonMobil started in Kazakhstan in 1993, becoming one of the first major Western oil companies to invest in the newly independent Republic. We are active in exploration, development, production and transportation of oil and gas. ExxonMobil has a 16.81% interest in the North Caspian Sea Production Sharing Agreement (NCSPSA) that includes the Kashagan field; a 25% interest in the Tengizchevroil (TCO) joint venture, which operates the super-giant Tengiz field, and a 7.5% interest in the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC).
Investing in economy
TCO operates a production license encompassing the Tengiz and Korolev fields. The production from these fields is processed through an associated processing plant complex that includes one of the largest single oil and gas processing trains in the world and the world’s highest-pressure sour gas re-injection. In 2011, gross production was 25.8 million tons of oil, with gross sales of gas approximately 6.9 billion cubic meters.
The NCSPSA covers an area of almost 5,700 sq km in Kazakhstan's sector of the Caspian Sea and includes the Kashagan, Kalamkas, Aktote, and Kairan discoveries. The development of Kashagan is underway and will include an offshore production/separation hub on an artificial island, drilling islands, onshore oil stabilization facilities and onshore gas treating facilities. The NCSPSA Operator is the North Caspian Operating Company (NCOC). Under this Operating Model, ExxonMobil is responsible, as an Agent on behalf of the NCOC, for all drilling activities beyond Kashagan Phase 1. This work includes drill well planning and operations execution, as well as rig contracting and construction. ExxonMobil has world-wide drilling technical expertise, including the Fast Drill Process, which uses real-time drilling energy analysis to maximize drill rate while also eliminating common borehole quality problems. This drilling process has improved the average meters-per-day of ExxonMobil's drill teams worldwide.
The Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC) operates a 1,581-kilometer pipeline that transports oil from Tengiz to Novorossiysk. Current pipeline deliveries average about 95 thousand tons of oil per day. An expansion project was launched in July 2011 to handle the growing production at TCO and other Kazakh and Russian fields, which will more than double the current capacity of the pipeline.
Investing in people
ExxonMobil is an active supporter of community programs wherever we live and work. We believe that our strong focus on education and health empowers communities and builds the foundation for human progress.
In 2005, ExxonMobil established the Astana Enterprise Development Center to provide business training, consulting and micro credits to small and medium businesses. Based on its successful experience and addressing the demand of the start-off entrepreneurs in Atyrau, we opened a similar Enterprise Development Center in Atyrau. To date, about 9,000 entrepreneurs have received business training in both cities.
We believe that healthcare is one of the cornerstones for social and economic development. This is why, in partnership with the Atyrau Regional Healthcare Department, ExxonMobil implements a number of health projects, such as the purchase of life-saving equipment for underweight newborns and training of the ob-gyn personnel in order to address the maternal and infant mortality issue.
Education is another priority area for us. ExxonMobil supports the Zhautykov National Specialized Physics and Mathematics School through the organization of the annual International Physics and Math Olympiad and intensive English classes to make the school’s students better competitive on the international arena.
