Baker & McKenzie is the world’s largest law firm, with more than 3,800 lawyers.  With 70 offices in 42 countries, including all major capitals and financial centers, we also are the world’s only truly global law firm.

Baker & McKenzie is consistently ranked at the top of the world’s law firms.  In 2011 Baker & McKenzie was ranked as the No. 1 “Elite Global Brand” for law firms following interviews of the legal department heads of 1000 of the world’s largest companies by an independent legal research firm.

We are well known to business and government leaders across the globe.   In 2011, Baker & McKenzie’s former Chairperson, Christine Lagarde, was elected as the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund and is considered one of the world’s most influential women.

Baker & McKenzie’s week-long Annual Meeting of Partners is a unique international legal event.  In addition to our partners, it is attended by the heads of legal departments of our major clients and international legal experts.  In 2011 Baker & McKenzie received the rare honor of being invited by the Chinese government to host our Annual Meeting in Beijing, culminating in a banquet at the Great Hall of the People in Tiananmen Square.

In 1989 Baker & McKenzie was the first international law firm to open an office in the Soviet Union, and following Kazakhstan’s independence, we were the first international law firm to open an office in Kazakhstan.  With more than 250 lawyers in our 5 CIS offices, Baker & McKenzie has the largest legal practice in the region.

Our highly regarded Almaty office serves as the hub for our practice in Central Asia.   In 2011 the international legal directory Legal 500 ranked our Almaty office in “Tier 1” of the international law firms in Kazakhstan and described our Almaty office as “the market-leading office” which provides clients with “a consistently excellent level of service.”

Our clients in Kazakhstan come from 6 continents and include the leading international companies in Kazakhstan.  More than ½ of the members of the Foreign Investors Council are clients of Baker & McKenzie.  We also act for a number of Kazakhstan’s leading state-owned companies, including the National Wealth Fund “Samruk-Kazyna.”

Our practice in Kazakhstan focuses on the following areas:  oil & gas; mining; international financial transactions; tax structuring; mergers/acquisitions; manufacturing; intellectual property rights; litigation/arbitration; and real estate/construction.  We are particularly proud of our involvement in transactions which have gained favorable international recognition for Kazakhstan, including Kazakhstan’s debut sovereign debt offering, the privatization of the Karaganda Steel Works (the largest privatization in the former Soviet Union) and the restructuring of US$ 16 billion of debt of BTA Bank (the largest bank restructuring in Eastern Europe/CIS during the recent financial crisis).

Baker & McKenzie is committed to improving the quality of the legal profession in Kazakhstan.   We run a highly-regarded intern program for top-ranked students in Kazakhstan’s law schools, and we have had leading Kazakhstani law professors give lectures in our offices on difficult legal issues.  Several of our young lawyers have received Baker & McKenzie scholarships to continue their education in leading law schools in the U.S. and U.K.   We also allow our Kazakhstani lawyers to work for up to a year in a foreign office of their choice.  Many of our alumni now hold senior legal positions at major international and local companies in Kazakhstan.

Part of Baker & McKenzie’s unique corporate culture is to give back to the communities where we work.  In Kazakhstan, we support a number of charitable events, as well as local orphanages.   Our lawyers in Kazakhstan also provide pro bono legal advice to needy parties.

Baker & McKenzie is honored to have been chosen by the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan as a founding member of - and as the only law firm to be a member of -- the Foreign Investors Council.   We have been an active participant in all of the Council’s events since its founding.

By co-chairing (along with the Ministry of Justice) the Legal Working Group of the Foreign Investors Council, Baker & McKenzie works closely with the Government, the Supreme Court and the Parliament on current legal issues in Kazakhstan.  We have helped draft important new laws, as well as amend existing laws to bring them into compliance with international standards.  We also have been closely involved in the reform of the country’s judicial system.  Through these efforts, Baker & McKenzie has significantly contributed to the improvement of Kazakhstan’s legal environment
