GE in Russia & CIS

GE has been operating in Russia since the early 20th century starting with the Soviet Union’s electrification and supplying locomotives and oil and gas equipment. Today headquartered in Moscow GE employs 3,200 people in more than 25 cities across Russia and CIS countries and provides solutions for multiple industries: electrical distribution, oil and gas, energy services, healthcare, transportation, aviation, water treatment, intelligent platforms, sensing/inspection technologies, lighting, financial services.

2 JVs in Russia in energy and health care; 16-slice CT assembly plant (Moscow); Energy Technology Center (Kaluga). Support facilities in Moscow for Russian clients and partners include health care training center, customer application center (energy) and engineering center (energy and transportation).

In 1940 GE supplied the first generators to Kazakhstan. GE’s representative office in Almaty was opened in 1994. Currently GE in Kazakhstan and Central Asia headquarters in Astana and representative offices in Almaty, Aksai, and Tashkent (Uzbekistan), Ashkhabat (Turkmenistan) co-ordinate the work of various GE businesses in the region.

As of today 200 GE employees in Kazakhstan productively work with national and private companies. The company successfully cooperates with Kazakhstan in such areas as oil and gas, energy, rail and air transport, water purification, health care and others.

Various GE businesses are successfully cooperating with Kazakhstan Ministries, state companies as “National Welfare Fund "Samruk - Kazyna" JSC, “NC “Kazakhstan Temir Zholy” JSC, “NC “KazMunaiGas” JSC, “Air Astana”, and are negotiating on joint projects with companies in the oil and gas, mining, energy and transport sectors as Kazakhmys, ENRC, etc.

In 1995, GE Transportation, the world’s leading manufacturer of diesel locomotives, signed the first contract with “NC “Kazakhstan Temir Zholy” JSC for the modernization of locomotives. A plant was built in Astana for the production of new generation locomotives GE Evolution with low fuel consumption and high ecological parameters. The first locomotive was assembled in 2009, and in late 2011 – the jubilee hundredth "Kazakhstan's locomotive" was produced.

GE Energy is actively involved in the development of Kazakhstan’s oil and gas complex, in particular, unique ultra-high-pressure turbo-compressors successfully operate on the KPO project, and more than 100 units of other equipment are used in gas reinjection projects. In 2010 GE signed a service agreement with a local partner for the repair and service maintenance of oil and gas equipment. At the moment, GE is under negotiations on signing an agreement for the localization of oil and gas equipment in Kazakhstan.

GE Power & Water, a GE Energy business unit, is implementing a project in Khorgos on building a wastewater processing station with advanced membrane technologies. Water purification membrane technology – is the only technology which successfully passed all state tests for prospective sewage disposal projects, which can be used in the modernization of municipal wastewater treatment in all cities of Kazakhstan.

GE Healthcare has successfully cooperated with public and private medical institutions of Kazakhstan, supplying the most advanced medical diagnostic equipment and training qualified specialists to work on it. In 2007 in Almaty a Centre for GE Ultrasonic diagnostic equipment was opened. GE is under negotiations on the localization of medical equipment in Kazakhstan.

Since 2006 General Electric regularly participates in meetings of the joint working groups of the Kazakhstan Foreign Investors' Council on current issues. In May 2011, General Electric became a full member of the Foreign Investors Council under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Today the company is represented in the Council by Lorenzo Simonelli - President and CEO of GE Transportation.
