TeliaSonera and Kcell at a glance
TeliaSonera provides telecommunication services in the Nordic and Baltic countries, Spain and emerging markets of Eurasia, including Russia and Turkey. Currently, our services cover 170 million subscribers all the way from the Nordic countries to Nepal. Founded in the 1850’s TeliaSonera is a pioneer of the telecom industry, one of the inventors of mobile communications and founders of GSM. We are committed to continue driving the information society and constantly taking our customers one step further. In less than 20 years, we have evolved from a group of local operators into Europe’s fifth largest telecom operator by market capitalization. TeliaSonera head office is located in Stockholm, Sweden.
In Eurasia, TeliaSonera has majority holdings in leading mobile operators in seven markets: Kazakhstan (Kcell), Azerbaijan (Azercell), Georgia (Geocell), Moldova (Moldcell), Nepal (Ncell), Tajikistan (Tcell) and Uzbekistan (Ucell). We are also the largest minority owner of MegaFon in Russia and Turkcell in Turkey.
TeliaSonera is a company with over 100 years history and experience in telecommunications, recognized as an industry leader. TeliaSonera and our partners, the vendors in the Nordic countries, invented and introduced the mobile phone technology that now serves as the basis for telecommunications all over the world. We launched the world’s first mobile network in Sweden in 1956, whereas the first competitor network was established only seven years later, in 1963.
True to our heritage as telecommunication pioneers, we continue investing in high quality networks and advanced technologies. We will ensure that our customers have access to the best solutions available now and in the future. We will continue to focus relentlessly on ensuring a superior customer experience in every market we operate.
TeliaSonera in Kazakhstan
TeliaSonera is present in Kazakhstan through its consolidated subsidiary, GSM Kazakhstan/Kcell. It was established in 1998 and, until recently, was a limited liability partnership between the state-owned JSC Kazakhtelekom (49%) and Fintur Holdings B.V. (51%) in which TeliaSonera directly and indirectly holds 74%. In 2011 TeliaSonera reached an agreement with JSC Kazakhtelecom to buy its 49% stake in Kcell and later consider an option of Initial Public Offering (IPO).
Kcell is known as a leading and pioneering mobile operator in Kazakhstan. Several years ago we were the first to market with mobile Internet access via GPRS and EDGE technologies. And now Kcell is expanding its mobile broadband offer based on 3G technology. In 2012, Kcell tends to complete its license obligations in terms of GSM network accessibility, having covered 100 percent of villages with a population of 1,000 people or more.
By combining local expertise with international experience, competence and financial strength, Kcell and TeliaSonera are developing the business to sustain a leading position in the mobile communication market of Kazakhstan Republic, one of the leading economies in Eurasia. We are committed to continue investing in the development of telecommunication infrastructure and services and implementing the most advanced technologies in Kazakhstan. Together, TeliaSonera and Kcell will continue contributing to the future prosperity of the country and its citizens.
Kcell’s head office, as well as TeliaSonera’s Eurasian headquarters for Central Asia operations is located in Almaty.
