Wabtec is a 500 Fortune Company, a leading supplier of critical parts/components, locomotives, services,
signaling and logistics systems, and services for the global rail industry.
Wabtec is focused on driving ongoing safety, innovation, efficiency,
reliability, and productivity.
Wabtec Corporation (formerly GE Transportation,
hereinafter referred to as “Wabtec”) has been operating in Kazakhstan since
1996. She played a key role in transforming Kazakhstan's railway industry.
In the period of 2004 – 2007 years,
there were more than 400 sections of 2TE10MK series freight locomotives
modernized. This allowed KTZ to reduce fuel costs by 15–20%,
increase the service life of locomotives by 15–20 years and meet the emission
requirements established by GOST and UIC II, which were in force at the time of
modernization.
Wabtec has invested more than
US$230 million in Kazakhstan, including investments in
manufacturing facilities, technology transfer, training and development of
railway specialists, and the development of a supplier manufacturing site that
employs a total of more than 1,000 people to manufacture and repair equipment,
components and spare parts.
The regular training has been
organized for the LKZ employees at leading manufacturing enterprises in the
USA. Today LKZ has a leading position in the production
of locomotives that meet the highest international standards for Kazakhstan and
export customers. In addition, the plant currently employs over 761 people, all
of them are citizens of Kazakhstan. The majority of these workers have
undergone extensive process and compliance training at Wabtec facilities.
In December 2023, Wabtec became the
sole shareholder of the LKZ plant and continues to
participate in the production of modern locomotives for the market of
Kazakhstan and the entire CIS region, including
Mongolia, Ukraine, and Moldova. Today, more than 520 locomotives are in active
operation.
As part of the joint program, KTZ
and Wabtec signed a long-term lease agreement for the ADS plant located in Astana in order for Wabtec to carry out a program for the
overhaul of Evolution series diesel engines for the entire CIS region. The
company has installed process equipment, tools and accessories to carry out
major overhauls in Kazakhstan not only of engine and turbocharger components,
but also of other components such as vibration dampers, brake systems, plain
bearings and air dryers. All plant personnel regularly participate in technical
trainings conducted in Kazakhstan and the USA.
In addition to the above-mentioned modernization
activities, Wabtec provided the KTZ training
center with a locomotive simulator with virtual reality technology, as well as
a model of the Evolution diesel engine. Thanks
to this technology, the KTZ training center is able to offer the most modern
training programs for technical personnel. To date, more than 1,000 employees -
citizens of Kazakhstan - have undergone professional training at this training
center.
Committed to maintaining the exceptional performance
and reliability of Wabtec's Evolution diesel locomotive series (TE33A, TE33AC,
TEP33A and 2TE10MK/BK), Wabtec has established
and fully equipped eight service centers across the country to provide
efficient scheduled and unscheduled maintenance of KTZ's locomotive fleet.
Currently, more than 100 Wabtec employees and over
1,000 employees of Kamkor Lokomotiv LLP, Wabtec’s local partner, are actively
involved in the maintenance and repair of world-class diesel locomotives of the
Evolution series.
As part of the KTZ digitalization program, Wabtec,
in partnership with the customer, is implementing the
digital product Trip Optimizer on the freight fleet of TE33A(C) series
locomotives to ensure efficient and energy-optimal driving
modes for diesel-powered freight trains in order to reduce diesel fuel
consumption for traction of trains. Additional benefits of Trip Optimizer
include increased security, operational transparency, and increased network
speed.
In September 2023, the company
signed a framework agreement with KTZ for the production
of locomotives for the period 2025-2026 and also for the development and
application of green technologies using LNG and hydrogen until 2030.
Additionally, Wabtec is working with customers on the use of digital
technologies such as PTC, KINETIX, which allows KTZ to increase the efficiency
of freight turnover and create a smart railway in Kazakhstan.
